Adaptive Sports Weekend Roundup – April 14-16, 2017

Hello and welcome to the first Adaptive Sports Weekend Roundup! Each week we will outline the exciting adaptive sports events of the upcoming weekend with everything from power soccer to wheelchair rugby to The Paralympics! The following week we’ll recap with scores and results so stay posted!

First up this weekend is the World Para Ice Hockey Championship in Gangneung, South Korea! The biannual tournament is already underway, and features national teams from Canada, the United States, Italy, Norway, Germany, Sweden and hosts South Korea. Canada and defending champions USA have jumped out to an early lead in the round-robin stage, neither team having conceded a goal yet. Six games will be played this weekend as the teams fight for a spot in next Thursday’s gold medal game. The schedule, standings and live stream can be found here, and past games can be viewed on the Paralympic Games Youtube channel.

Another international competition taking place this weekend is the Easter Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Blankenberge, Belgium. The 12th edition of the event will feature The Netherlands, Great Britain, Australia, Japan and Spain in a round-robin competition. These teams all competed at last summer’s Rio Paralympics so we’re sure to see some great games over the holiday weekend. The event is organized by Parantee-Psylos, the Flemish Federation of Disability Sports; visit their website for the schedule, scores and livestream coverage!

Finally in Powerchair Soccer, four New England squads will head to Canton, Massachusetts on Saturday for the Cheuchi Challenge Cup. Hosts PRHC Chariots will be the favorites going into the event, but they will face tough competition from the Boston Brakers, Northeast Passage Wildcats and the Vermont Chargers. We’ll be covering this event so be sure to watch our social media pages for updates!

We hope you will check out these awesome events! We are excited to highlight each weekend’s adaptive sports action in this new series. Of course we have not covered all of the events out there this weekend. If there are any other events you know about please let us know in the comments or send us a message on our contact page. Thanks!
