US Power Soccer Nationals Day 2 – Flames and Ghostriderz Inch Closer to Titles

The MK Battery Conference Cup Series was in full swing Sunday, with the championships for all four US Power Soccer conferences running simultaneously. We’ll recap the day’s action here, starting with the lowest-level Founders Conference and working our way up to the teams competing for the national championship in the Premier Conference.

In the Founders Cup, the group stage is mostly complete, with three games left to play on Monday morning before the top 2 teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals. The group winners are already decided; The Shepherd Strikers’ 3-0 record was enough to clinch group A with one game left to play, and the Sac Valley Flames won all three of their Sunday games to stay perfect and win group B.

Meanwhile there is still one semi-final slot to play for in each group. In group A, the RHI Inferno have completed their games and are poised to advance, but a win by the Glendale Rough Riders would put them level on points, sending it to tiebreakers. In group B, the pivotal game is Ability 360 FC vs the Baystate Falcons, which could see either team or the STRAPS Scorpions advance, again depending on tiebreakers.

Solid Glendale Rough Riders defending, mainly by Zebreda Dunham, kept the RHI Inferno in check in an eventual 1-1 draw [Video credit Power Soccer Shop].

Over in the Presidents Cup, the elimination games already started on Sunday evening. In the first quarterfinal, the Wisconsin Warriors continued their perfect tournament by taking down the ASPO Force 6-1. The game was close early, just 2-1 at halftime, but the Warriors poured it on early in the second half to secure a spot in the semifinals. They’ll face the Tidewater Piranhas, who blanked the BORP Shockers 3-0 in their quarterfinal.

On the other side of the bracket, we had a tight quarterfinal between two San Jose rivals. The Flash and Rockets were locked In the end it was the 3 seed Flash who edged out a 1-0 victory over the 2 seed Rockets. The second tier Champions Cup is the smallest tournament at this event with only 8 teams, so all of the teams will advance to the quarterfinal round. After two rounds of games, the PRHC Chariots and Atlanta Sting are on top of their respective groups with 2-0 records.

The lack of eliminations after the group stage means that the other six teams all have everything to play for as they jockey for seeding in the playoff bracket. The last round of the group stage will take place around lunchtime on Monday, followed by the quarterfinals at 6:00 pm.

Finally, the top-level Premier Cup got its first few group games out of the way on Sunday afternoon, with five teams posting a perfect record. In group A, the Minnesota Shockwave went 2-0, continuing their season-long winning streak while scoring 10 goals and allowing zero. In addition, the hometown Turnstone Flyers won their only game of the day 7-1 over the SoCal Vaqueros.

Over in group B, the new-look RHI Sudden Impact started off their title defense with two convincing wins, 4-0 over the San Jose Steamrollers and 6-1 over the DASA SLSG Cyclones. The Circle City Rollers and Tampa Thunder picked up easy wins to keep pace. The rest of the group stage will take place on Monday, and then the top 8 teams will advance to the playoff bracket, which will be played in its entirety on Tuesday.
