NESHL 2019 Sports4Life Classic Day 2: Tournament-defining matches all around (3/9/19)

NEP Wildcats Celebrating after goal

A terrific first day laid the groundworks for the 2019 NESHL Championship group stages and today continued the excitement.

In Division A, the Northeast Passage Wildcats and Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins took the 1 and 2 seeds respectively, defeating their other opponents in convincing fashion. If these teams take care of business in the semifinals, we’ll see a rematch of the best round-robin match in the final. The Wildcats-Mighty Penguins match was neck and neck until the last 5 minutes, when the Wildcats scored 4 rapid fire goals to pull away.

The Gaylord Wolfpack squad struggled to find players for their first match on Friday, but they bounced back Saturday morning. After a scoreless first period with the Philadelphia Flyers they piled on six unanswered goals including the following goal by Rachel Grusse (#4) assisted by Josh Buglione (#91). They would finish their group stage later with an 8-0 loss at the hands of the hometown NEP Wildcats.

In the B division, we’ll see two matchups where the teams know each other well. First, it’s North vs South as both of the Columbus Blue Jackets teams will face off. The South team had the edge in the group stage, finishing with a 3-0 record, while the North team took a loss to the New England Warriors. En route to their perfect group stage, Blue Jackets South took down the Warriors today 5-0. With a four goal performance, Ben Musselman (#2) showed incredible control over the match. The Warriors will take on Atlantic rivals the Springfield Thunderbirds in the other semifinal, and the winners will face each other for the B division title!

In Tier II of the B division, the second teams of the Northeast Passage Wildcats and Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins took the top two spots. Facing off against them in the semifinal round will be the Ohio Warriors and the Boston Shamrocks. Will the B teams hold strong in the semifinals, or can the Warriors and Shamrocks pull off the upset?
