US Power Soccer Nationals 2019 Day 1 – Scorpions, Warriors, and Piranhas Come Out Swinging

The MK Battery Conference Cup Series got underway yesterday with the group stages of the Presidents and Founders Cups, levels 3 and 4 in the US Power Soccer system. In the Founders Cup, we are less than halfway through the group stage, so the standings are tough to read. Newcomers Houston Fireballs sit on top of Group A with a win over the Glendale Rough Riders and a draw with the Vermont Chargers. Jackson Long grinded out the second goal of the 3-3 draw in the video below midway through the second half. Veteran squads RHI Inferno and Shepherd Strikers aren’t far behind in Group A with one win each, so it’s shaping up to be a tight race for the playoff spots.

The picture is a little clearer in Group B, where the STRAPS Scorpions and Sac Valley Flames are both off to 2-0 starts in their first Conference Cups. They’ll face off at 8:00 am today in a game that could decide the group winner! Rookie squad, Baystate Falcons, and the ASPO Force trail closely with 1-1 records so far.

The Presidents Cup is a bit further along, so the top teams are making themselves known. The Wisconsin Warriors picked up right where they left off last summer, scoring 15 goals and only allowing 2 in their three wins so far. That leaves them with a 6 point lead atop group A, only needing a draw this morning to clinch the 1 seed.

In group B, the Virginia’s Tidewater Piranhas are in a similar position, also with a 3-0 record as well as a +13 goal difference. The difference here is the Central Valley Ghostriderz, who are also undefeated and will challenge for the top spot in the group in their last 2 games. A win in their first game tomorrow will set up a clash of undefeated teams with the Piranhas to decide the group!
